Tranexamic Acid for Stubborn Pigmentation

Tranexamic acid is worth knowing about specifically because it works differently from the usual brightening ingredients. Most inhibit the enzyme that produces pigment. Tranexamic acid interrupts the signalling that tells skin to produce pigment in the first place — which is why it sometimes works on marks that have not responded to anything else.
How it differs
Ingredients like alpha arbutin and vitamin C mainly inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme that makes melanin. Tranexamic acid interferes with the interaction between skin cells and pigment-producing cells, dampening the signal to produce pigment at all.
Because it acts on a separate pathway, it can be combined with tyrosinase inhibitors for an additive effect, and it is often the option that helps when others have plateaued.
What it is used for
- Melasma — the patchy pigmentation often triggered by hormones or sun exposure.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the marks left after spots or injury.
- General uneven tone that has not responded to vitamin C or arbutin.
How to use it
Topical products typically use 2% to 5%. It is well tolerated and does not require the gradual introduction that retinoids do.
Apply once or twice daily to clean skin. Pigmentation work is slow — expect eight to sixteen weeks before making a judgement, and longer for melasma.
Sun protection decides the outcome
Every pigmentation treatment is working against UV exposure, which drives melanin production directly. Melasma in particular rebounds quickly with sun exposure.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is not a supporting step here. It is the step that determines whether the treatment achieves anything at all.

Yes, and the combination is common. They act on different parts of the pigment pathway, so the effect is additive rather than redundant.
Is it the same as the oral medication?
The same molecule, but oral tranexamic acid is a prescription medicine used for entirely different purposes and carries real risks. Topical use is a separate matter — never self-prescribe the oral form for skin.
